NissanMan,
The 17 HMR is ample firepower on coyotes inside of 100 maybe 125 yards. However, any shot other than a head or neck shot is not likely to kill the coyote in its tracks. Most 17 HMR loads are a 17 grain bullet compared to a 32 or even 50-55 grain on a .204 or .223. Also, the latter two mentioned cartridges have about 3 times the powder charge of the 17 HMR. Therefore, you have no knockdown power compared to the bigger cartridges. Hope this helps. The .22 mag is also legal on gamelands as it is a rimfire of no greater than .22 caliber as per the regs.

I've got a Savage with the heavy barrel and it will shoot a 5 shot group at 50 yds that can be covered with a dime. The further out the target gets, the more that the bullet is effected by wind and it does not take much. I've killed groundhogs with mine. It' a little bitty bullet that goes real fast without much recoil and relatively quiet.
