I know some of you out there have kids that enjoy the shooting sports. I am the leader/marksmanship instructor for our Lenoir County club. If any of your kids age in range from 9 to 18 and have hunter's safety education or are willing to get it, then they are welcome to participate. We have several disciplines available: rifle (small bore), shotgun, blackpowder, and archery. We will have archery available after Christmas. During the winter months we meet about once a month and during the warmer months we meet more often. We also have an annual competition at Camp Millstone ever October. Our club is only about 12 months old and we currently have 8 committed members. We are also looking for parents who want to donate some time and expertise. For those of you who live in other counties, I think most counties in NC have shooting sports clubs. Adult voluneers have to go through a background check. If you have a child that is interested or know someone who does, my name is Joseph Reilly and you can reach me at 252-725-7833. Or if it would make you more comfortable, you can call the Lenoir County Agricultue Extension Office at 252-527-2191 and ask for Tara Taylor. Thanks.

I love tht you put this out there! I used to coach 4-H in Texas (horse judging and riding). I've been looking at getting back into it and this will help me a lot. I hadn't even thought about the shooting sports side of things for the kids until I read this. Our oldest isn't old enough yet but when he is this is definitely something I'd like him to be involved in. 4-H is such a great organization and people forget that it's not all Livestock.

Onslow County doesn't have a 4-H Club or a shooting sports club within 4-H? If they don't have shooting sports it's likely because no one has stepped up to the plate to coach it.

Richlands High Scool had a skeet shooting team for a while but it disappeared for some reason.

there is 4-H within Onslow County, but no research I've found shows shooting clubs.

Lenoir County didn't have a 4H shooting sports club until about 12 months ago. The local extension agent that manages all of the 4H clubs started it. If a volunteer doesn't step up to run the club, most likely it would not be successful. I was a marksmanship instructor in the Marine Corps and shot both service rifle and pistol competitively. Since I enjoyed my time on the range and helping others learn the skills needed for shooting, I volunteered to teach marksmanship. I had to attend a 2 day workshop just to be qualified to teach my 4H club (because of state liability requirements) and next time I attend the workshop I will get certified for archery. We also need a shotgun instructor. For all of you in other counties, if you don't yet have a club and want one, then volunteer to lead it. That's what I did. We started with no money. Money is always an issue. The Lenoir County Hunter's Assoc. gave our club $500. If any of you are members, thank you for that generous donation. I posted this info. about our club to try to get some more members. We need to meet a minimum number of participants to be associated with the Civilian Marksmanship Program. We are still working on it.
