Mosin-Nagant 91/30 Headspace.

Guys, I have a little bit of a dilemma. I purchased a Mosin-Nagant 91/30 last year for Christmas(actually that was the wife's present to me. :D ) Anyway, I have not shot it because I am worried the head space is not up to snuff. Does any body know anyone that has a 7.62x54R headspace gauge. The rifle itself is in very good condition considering it was originally manufactured in 1932 at the Tula Arsenal. I really would like to fire this rifle. I have even though about getting the monte carlo stock for it but I am not sure I want to take away from this rifle. It really is in good condition. I would love to be able to bring it to the Forum Shoot. Any way, what are your thoughts?

i recently got one too and i was worried about the same thing so i jerry rigged a stand and hid behind a wall and pulled the trigger with a string

it worked fine for me and have no problems with the headspace.

however if you shoot surplus ammo make sure you wash the barrel out with warm soapy water, swab it dry, then oil it with in a day of shooting it or you will pit your barrel extensively

Be sure that you have it checked by someone who knows what they are doing. Just because a SAAMI Spec go/no go says it is too much headspace doesn't mean that it won't meet Military Specs and work just fine.

Look...I do not want this to sound like a plug for anyone, but Rick Miller out in Haws Run has always been a stand up guy and taken care of me for many years including building me a semi-custom bolt action rifle that shoots lights out. If you are that worried... go see Rick and have him look at the rifle. Miller's Gun Shop across from Haws Run FD/Rescue. If nothing more have a qualified gunsmith look at the rifle. I promise you that it would be a whole lot better than for me to be seeing you on my floor at the hospital and me taking care of you because you didn't.

Umm.... yeah.... you won't be seeing me in the Hospital because My butt will not shoot a rifle like that, rigged in such a manner! Good on ya though. I will see about getting out to Millers' when I can. Thanks for the advice!
