Any of the medium burning powders work well. If you go to any of the online reloading sites or places that have reloading info, i.e. Accurate, Alliant and my favorite...HODGDON powders, which also makes IMR and Winchester....try to find a great recipe that will use the same powder for both. Then you don't have extra stuff laying around. In your case IMR 4064 is wonderful for both .30-06 and .308. You can make match grade loads for both cals and in 165grain bullets if you WORK YOU LOADS up. Remember what works in mine will not work as well in yours and vice versa. I know that one of the local shops here had IMR 4064 on their shelf last week along with primers, brass, and a variety of bullets.
First place to start....if you do not have a book is of course to get one....but then you can go to Hodgdon website and they have an interactive reloading manual online...as does IMR, WInchester, Alliant or many of the bullet manufacturers. Cross reference. There are enuff reloading sites on the internet you should not have an issue finding a safe and accurate load for both cals using IMR 4064.

thanks renegade.doghunter sent me the pages from hodgon and give me a couple of his loads with different powders that he likes.i know every rifle is different and you have to play with them to perfect a load for each one and that is what i intend to do and then load about 500 to 1000 rounds for each.i might not be thinking rite wanting to reload, for instance=my 30/06 with the hornady 150gr btsp ammo=.75" three shot group at 100yds and basically a 2.5" group at 213yds,the grouping at this yardage was probably due more to human error than the rifle or ammo.however the problem i have is getting the hornady ammo, even trying to order it offline, and then of course the price of the ammo nowadays!if i get a chance to shoot my rifle i'd rather shoot it 25-30 times then 2 or 3!

I have yet to see a factory load that I haven't been able to equal or in most cases better! Factory loads have to be loaded to fit all mfgs rifles, bolt actions, autoloaders, breech loaders etc. After you find your best recipe, adjusting the seating depth and neck sizing only will help fine tune the rifle's capability. Neck tension on the bullet is a crucial step in my reloading. I use the competition neck sizing bushing dies for this and place only enough tension on the bullet to hold it in the neck.
Whatever you do, be certain that you don't mix any fireformed, necksized brass in with some for another rifle. Once you adjust the seating depth and neck size, the case dimensions are then fireformed to a specific chamber and might cause problems in any other weapon.

i do not doubt being able to hand load a "better than factory"load anymore, there are so many variousness in the average ammo[rem core lokt, win pp,]that they are impossible for me to even think about shooting and the "good"ammo[hornaday, federal vital shocks, and so on]COST so freakin much anymore and are not available.i had to go to wilmington today and stopped in 3 different places only to find NO .308win or .30/06 ammo on the shelf!i want to find a load the rifle likes and load a bunch and have them sitting on the shelf waiting for me.i loaded shotgun shells for years and i probably have close to 12,000 rds sitting in buckets on a shelf in my building rite now!they won't go bad and i do not have to worry about running around trying to find ammo if i decide to go on a dove hunt somewhere.
