Over the past several years, insurance companies have done studies on deer/vehicle collisions. They have determined that more deer/vehicle interactions happen during the breeding season/rut. I have conducted my own study the last few days and concur!
Last Friday, I went to Rex hospital in Raleigh for a CT Scan and Xrays. Between exits 373 and 290 I saw one dead deer along the road. Today, I went back to Raleigh for a followup with my Dr. Between exits 373 and 355, I saw no deer. From 355 to exit 290, I counted 17 dead deer, all bucks between cow horns and a decent 8 point. It was kind of odd that the dead deer were located in that specific area. I think it is a sure bet that the rut is on from the Clinton area west toward Raleigh.

Iv'e seen a couple roadkill on the way to work both ways. So maybe it is getting this way...but spent the better part of the morning in the stand with fog on the ground and managed to see? 1 squirrel, 2 dove and 5 turkey (jakes). And the two darned deer in the middle of the road as I drove out. My corn is gone, ground is torn up and nothing to show for it...however, gotta admit that it was clear last nite. Gonna have to get some feed out and see tomorrow.

I have worked in automotive parts for the last 8 years and I can honestly say that this happens every year this time. I don't have exact figures but I guess that our body shop parts sales are up about 75% compared to any other time of the year. We also have 2 cars at our shop right now that were damaged by collisions with deer. Every year starting in late October I start joking with one of the body shop owners here in town about how it is getting that "time again".

I had to make a quick run to Wallace yesterday morning and saw a cow horn and a 6 lying along side the road in just that 12 miles or so!
And 2 possums and 2 small "unrecognizables"!

My wife killed a large bear yesterday evening in the Deep Run area. Unfortuneatley she used a Chrysler Town and Country van as her weapon. Luckily no one was injured.

Could've gotten REAL expensive if she had needed a "reload"!
Glad no one else was hurt.
(My youngest brother hit one with his Jeep last week; he could still see the critters back over the hood of the Jeep when he plowed into it! Airbags deployed. Jeep totaled. Bear ran off! (Not found by the GW's the next day, either!)
