"RenegadeRN" made a comment in the "Pre Rut" thread that I just had to comment on... and I feel it should have its own thread!

We can never be "TOO SAFE" out there, ever.

Not to lecture, but I firmly believe we each have to do everything we can to be continuously aware of "SAFETY FIRST" and always do everything we can to ensure that we are "SAFE". Not just in the interest of statistics, etc., but, selfishly, in our own interest and that of our families, as well as in the interest of every other hunter or other person in the woods or anywhere "downrange". "Prevention" is in OUR hands. What WE DO does influence others.

Years ago, when I first started bowhunting out of trees, a friend of mine, (several "friends" of mine; truth be told), used to tease me about the safety straps I used to tie myself to the tree. A few years later, a number of us were brought together as a search party to find one of those friends when he didn't return home from a day of hunting. We found him. At the base of his tree, impaled on his own arrows. That is a mission I hope to NEVER repeat, and I would hope none of you ever have to, either.

Our equipment has improved immensely since those days. Take advantage of every bit of the technology available. If you don't have one of the RSS harnesses, you should GET ONE! ALWAYS USE THE BEST GEAR YOU CAN GET. It truly could save your life one day.

If you can't do that, do me a favor and stay out of trees. That is one dangerous place.

Meanwhile; Good Luck to all!

I second this. Besides the obvious reasons....I want you to ponder a few things this season. As a Paramedic and an RN I see how fragile life truly is. No one thinks it will be me because to you I am the "other guy." And while my children are grown and have their own children..I still have a better half. I want you to take a second and really imagine your mate and your children trying to make ends meet in this economy because you OR they weren't safe. I want you to ponder them and your friends talking amongst themselves wondering what went wrong...and if you take your children or mate into the woods this year as many do? ....'Nuff said!

funny i should read this,i just put three safety harnesses on lys for free!i am in the process of cleaning out my work building and found 4 or 5 of the ones that come with the "buddy" ladder stands.i know they are not the hss ones but they are surely better than nothing!i hate to throw them away something that can be used and i have already heard a couple horror stories from this years bow season,1 with a broke arm and 1 with a couple ribs broke[?] i think it was, nonetheless, all were because they did not have on a harness!!!! and one more thing, always see your shot all the way thru!what i mean is what is on the backside of your target the ground, trees,a house, someones children playing in the backyard????i do not care how big he is or how many points he has or none of that crap,it is not worth hurting,or worst, killing someone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Guys,

While we are talking about this, I have a nearly new large Pro model HSS with a lineman belt I'll let go for $75. They are about $150 at Dick's. I wore it twice last year after my mid season back surgery.
