I used to really enjoy trapping back in my high school days. Back then, coons were bringing 18.00 each and a fox would garner about 35.00. I don't know of anyone around these days that even buys fur.
Animal Rights Activist almost shut the Fur Market down, because of tearing Fur Coats off Women and making threats. There is still a Fur Market, but the prices are not as high as they once were.

In the late 70's and early 80's, dozens of guys around here had a coon dog. People were killing coons as fast as they could tree them to get the 18.00 each the fur dealers were paying. When hurricanes Floyd and Fran hit our area, the woods were destroyed to the point that navigating on foot was all but impossible. About this same time, the bottom fell out of the fur market and the coon dogs disappeared. For the last 4-5 years, the coon population has reached tremendous numbers here in the coastal regions. All of my deer hunters on my lease are taking pictures of 2-5 on their corn piles at one time and a couple of the guys have had feeders destroyed. Consequently, the rabies issues have increased as well.

I never did get into trapping. I've hunted most small game and deer but never trapped anything.

We used to catch HUGE racoons here at work and take them farther into the woods and let them go.

I trap every once in a while to use the Furs for training, I know several people looking to buy fresh furs for the same thing, but prices arent worth the Hassle.

About 10 years ago, Duplin and Sampson counties were paying around $40 for every beaver tail you took them as a bounty. I think that has about dried up as well. there are more raccoons than ever!
