View Full Version : North Carolina Coyote Regulations

There is no closed season for hunting coyotes in North Carolina. They cannot be hunted with the use of a light at night or on Sunday. Handheld and electronic calls are allowed. There are no bag limits or possession limits. There are no weapons restrictions. Check the Game Lands Regs as they have different stipulations. I can't imagine that anyone would want to hunt any of eastern North Carolina's game lands for coyotes as they are over run with people.

Except in the game land when no other game animal is in season you cannot use anything larger than a .22 mag. During any open season you must use legal weapons for that season ie turkey season you can only use shotguns. And if you hunt on a military base it's a whole different ball game.

If I remember right, (unless things have changed), Camp Lejeune and surrounding bases are Shotgun or Bow only for all species.

Shotgun, bow or muzzleloader.

Anyone aware of any efforts to allow night hunting for coyotes?

There was discussion last spring at our local WRC meeting but in the end it was shot down. The WRC position is that it will lead to more firelighting of deer under the guise folks are coyote hunting.

I can tell ya that few changes come from the comments at the public hearings. To really change something you need to get one of the Commissioner's ear and convince them why this is a good idea. I was in the last big game committee meeting and the commissioners there seemed to be leaning towards only addressing issues that only have wide support and they are thinking about petitions in particular as a way to judge that support. It's a lot of BS when they say it will increase poaching. If someone is going to poach they don't care what the law is they'll just do it. Lots of states have a night season on yotes.

I agree completely Moose. Then you have the silly law that allows 10 disgruntled people to file a written complaint that requires the WRC to send the matter to legislative review before any action can be taken. The most recent example of this was the opposition by the NCBHA on the new proposals for muzzleloading and Sunday hunting with bows. I think it totally wrong anytime a majority is silenced by a minority.

This I am sure is a sore subject. I realize this is for Coyote Regs...but why not Sundays? I KNOW the supposed reasons...i.e. Bible Belt and all. But NC is one of the few states that do not allow hunting on Sundays. I know a year or so ago there was a petition online to try to change that and guess it got shot down.

Thing is that most people have daytime, week type jobs that will only allow Sat. hunting for them. This only allows hunting for one day a week! So why not Sundays?

Thanks admin for the info on Coyote Regs.

Sunday hunting with a firearm is outside the control of NCWRC. The bow hunting got delayed with a bunch of the new regs but I'm pretty sure will make it through the cooling off period with out the legislators touching them.

So non-hunters can use forrests for whatever they normally do one day a week during hunting seasons without worrying about hunters getting riled up.

What about the 190 days or so of the year outside of hunting season when there are virtually no hunters in the woods? Don't the non-hunters pretty much have things to themselves?:party0003:

I never said I agree or disagree with it, that is just how a non-hunter tried to justify it to me. I think it does kinda make sense, though, on government property, but not if you are hunting on private property.

I guess there are both sides of the story for the hunters verses non-hunters. The age old debate!

I'm sure it was said but what is the current bag limit and season?

the thoughts of lights increasing poaching is pure unadulterated BS... hunting fur at night isn't a stealthy endevour... there are lights constantly scanning, calls being made etc... I've hunted at night for years before I moved here and trust me you see very few deer while you're on stand... not saying it can't happen, I've got a call or 2 that perfectly imitates a fawn in distress and will bring in a curious doe to check it out... BUT that is a special call not made anymore and rarely seen on the used call market... many times I've had the game warden waiting by my vehicle for me to come off a stand and never has there been a problem... I was heavily involved in the PA Predator hunters assoc and sure would be happy to join any attempt to get night hunting passed here too... it'd be great to get back into night hunting for coyote and fox again... Dale...
