I'm just curious what you guys feel is the best home defense shot gun is. The answer "one that shoots", while accurate, is not exceptable. Something good for intruders, looters, zombies, whatever may come your way.
I like my Mossberg 500 personally.

But I'm also a fan of the FN Tactical Police shot gun, and have been kicking around the idea of picking one up.
So what do you guys think?

While having a good reliable shotgun is important skills and training are just as important.
I like a forward mounted light on a home protection weapon such as a surefire with a pressure switch. You will need to identify your target and know if that bump in the night is a creep or your teenage son coming in late.

Agreed. Proper training in the use of a shotgun for home defense is indeed something that goes hand in hand with proper equipment. Proper training with any equipment, especially equipment your life or the life of your family may depend on, is important. You can have the best equipment in the world, however if you can't use it to its fullest, you're left with an expensive paperweight.

I enjoy Mossberg 500's especially in the 590 configurations. A good pump is all that is needed, a light def. helps. Yes you must always identify the target.
I use Remington Wing Master with 18 1/2" Barrel, loaded with 00 Buckshot.

You would be better off with birdshot.

I'll stick with 00 Buck though. I understand the pattern does not spread much and that the penetration is much deeper but with birdshot as well, it will leave a very large area of damage as well at the ranges most likely encountered in self defense situations. But thats me.

I have a little one to worry about. Which I would grab my .40 before my shotgun. 00 Buck will penetrate much deeper than birdshot but that penetration may be the problem. Soft tissue is soft tissue and hit by most anything is gonna kill the bastard. Most people aren't trained nor do they know the correct ways of shooting so birdshot offers a wider margin of error, plus limited collateral damage, that's why it gets my vote.

I go with what I learned from my dad, a complete bastard: first two out the barrel are birdshot so you get your senses from a dead sleep, then 00 buck. Brenneke makes some really nice reduced recoil 2 3/4" Home Defense Slugs to replace 00 Buck for those who are more comfortable and more sure of their target.
