A Blackfish is a pre-historic looking fish that when hooked will test your equipment, wet you, your boat, and everthing in it. No one targets these fish, and most cuss when they catch one. And yes, there are some flatheads in the Tar River. Two guys that I work with caught one that weighted 27.3 lbs. in early May. Theirs took a night crawler, thought they were hung! Never targeted them before, but it sounds fun. If you try them, let us know how you do. Good Luck,Sammy

Blackfish, Grindel, or what have you....yep, fun to fight the first time or two, but is a huge pain. And then you might hook into an American Eel. SLIMY, SLIMY! Just cut the line hook, weight, and all coz the slime stays with you. LOL! It depends on how far you wanna drive. The Roanoke River used to be WONDERFUL for channels, blues and yellows. And at the right time the stripers (rockfish) come up river and SHRIMP was always the ticket I found. (I grew up in the midwest where we used cutbait, stinkbait, cornflake balls made with garlic, worms, and even Ivory Soap, but never caught one on anything other than shrimp around here.

I found a way of removing those old slick eels from the hook, us a brown paper bag. they stick to the paper. drop them in tail first squeeze the bag around behind the head and you can remove the hook with out having to rerig. they are not bad to eat as long as they are eaten while still hot.
