My friend Jimmy Pierce and I setup on a bird opening morning that I had roosted the afternoon before. Because of limited cover, we had to setup just across the ditch from a pulpwood road I had the decoys on. The birds were roosted about 130 yards from our setup. I tree called just a couple of imes and got the birds to fly down pretty quickly. I could hear the Tom drumming ll the way to the decoys. It took twelve minutes and thirty five seconds from my first call to the shot. This bird had a fine paint brush beard. We were able to video this hunt.
We left at 6:58 am and went to some property he owns where we found a bird already strutting in a big field with two hens. I placed Jimmy just inside the wood line and I setup behind him and began calling. The bird slowly left the hens and came to within 20 yards of the wood line presenting Jimmy with a great shot opportunity. His bird had 2 beards. Click the YouTube link below to see my entire hunt.
