Ok all you displaced westerners....I am curious as to whether or not any of you LOVE the shepherd scopes as much as I do now. I had read a bit on these scopes and was fortunate enough to find one on Craigs list one day for the nominal fee of $125. Since they list at a modest $699, I called and arranged to meet the gentleman immediately with no intention of dickering on the price. The tale gets even better since the scope had just been sent back to him after a complete going over by the manufacturer. ( he had the paperwork to prove it )
I mounted it on my .300 mag remington and went to the range where I followed the simple sight in instructions to the letter.......One shot....100 yds....keep same aim point and dial the crosshair to the bullet hole......nuther shot........final adjustment & Bingo.......dead on. The range circles then allow dead on holds out to 800 yds and beyond and are adjustable for necessary windage ( seperate turrets ) which allow you to SEE the windage you dial in and still return to zero. I do not advocate shots of that distance unless you shoot VERY often and are extremely familiar with your weapon, but in these here parts the ethics of those shots remain in question as the game can then be difficult to find if it runs off any distance. I try to limit my shots to around 300 yds at the most , and make every effort to get a solid fix on the animal's position before I squeeze the trigger. If I have time, I use my rangefinder, and then range BACK to the stand when I go to retrieve the animal. That puts me within a few feet of where he stood when I shot.
I can see where this scope could be really beneficial out West in the mouintains & rolling hills or for long range shots over cut fields. See the shepherd web site for more info,
