deer hunting the bigger the buckshot the better i like them,00 or 000's! as for shooting coyotes i would probably shoot #1's
[00 would be the biggest] and the choke would be whichever one it took to shoot the majority of the load in a 36" group at say 70-75 yards.it mite be a modified or it may take a full then again it mite be an improved cylinder.you will have to figure out what size buckshot and then pattern your shotgun to figure out what choke.hope this helps

I am going through this dilemna myself...as most of my stands are for rifles, I have recently been confronted, and didn't take a shot, due to a "visitor" approaching in THICK cover. SO, I have been patterning different chokes and buckshot sizes in a Mossberg 835 just as you. I purchased the Carlson's Dead Coyote Choke ( as it is SO incredibly marketed). It layed claims to "upwards of 70 yards" patterns. Pretty impressive, I thought. Well to make a long story short, I am NOW testing chokes in a Browning A-bolt shotgun I have (smoothbore with a rifled choke I used for deer hunting). I patterned #4 Federal, 3-inch Premium shells with zero success. I was using chokes from a Mossberg 500, as they are interchangeable with the Invector System on my Browning. I found that the gun shot the best pattern at 60 or so yards with #1 Winchester Super-X, 2 3/4 inch shells. This choke measured .715. I also tried the improved (.725), the full (.695), the extra-full (.690) and the tighter I went, the worse the pattern became. Everything that I found about the "predator chokes" called for dimensions such as: .696, .690, .695. and even some claims for buckshot to be shot out of a .675, not that it can't but it was just the totally wrong direction for me. I would suggest George Trulock chokes..they will exchange (as I was told yesterday) a choke if it doesn't pattern for you. I like the #1 or #4 buckshot personally.

there you go!you have to pattern a shotgun!i have a browning bps that i ended up getting a carlsons extra-full choke tube for and it shoots 3" ww 00 buckshot really well and it shoots the 000 buckshot even better!at 70yards it [on average]put 12 of the 15 00buck and 9 of the 000buck in a 36" circle!i love it,first gun in a long time that will shoot 000buck.back when i was running dogs deer hunting we never used a rifle and we were serious about buckshot, some of the guys i hunted with actually had there guns[rem 1100 3"magnums-30"full choke barrels]sent off and had the barrels worked to shoot 000buckshot.NO JOKE!the guns [bvarrels] were reworked and the results were phenonamal!

I haven't tried 000 buck..I was trying to adhere to a few more shot to increase my "odds". I guess if it'll pattern that tightly at that range it would assuredly put a coyote down..something else to consider now......I ain't exactly sure I appreciate another factor..LOL

you mite have to face the fact that your gun just doesn't like to shoot buckshot,it happens,no matter what choke you try.i had a browning one time that i spent alot of money on trying choke tubes and buckshot.no matter what choke or load i tried you could barely hit an 8'x8' square at 75 yards.didn''t take me long to sell that one!

OUCH...I really have to hang onto this one..even if it is shelved....it IS good for slugs, if I decide to take it back in the "deer woods". They stopped making it after 2-3 years....so the value is climbing. If nothing else it cold be a "money maker"....lol. I do understand what you're saying though. I guess if it fails, I could go back to "beating" the 835 around for a pattern.

I think I'd put that one back for turkey and slugging, and maybe look into a small caliber rifle for the predators. Sounds like that scattergun don't like the big lead balls much. Like buckhunter said, some do, some don't. I've had some that would throw buckshot like a golfball, and some that just sort of, flopped the shot out thataways. No real consistency in the shot patterns.

lol...if you can locate it, there is always 0000 or tri-ball. whew...big old lead balls. no pun intended.

i know for a fact you have got a rem 870 that loves 3" 00 buckshot manxx!it has a modified choke tube in it and the shot pattern at 75 yards is quite impressive!trust me,i know.

Yea....I understand that I can't just pick out the gun I want to use..it is becoming all to apparent. I like the portability of this Browning though..lightweight, "tater-jarring" with buckshot, but easy to swing and carry.....which I need due to health issues. I saw you mention a small caliber rifle suggestion.....MY problem, on a few stands, is HEAVY COVER..I had the .22BR the last time I called this brush and the coyote came up....in the brush....and left..in the brush. I didn't sttempt a shot, though I had the crosshairs on it, due to the tanglement. That's when I realized I needed a good shotgun tht WOULD throw a respectable pattern of #1 through #4...whichever I could get to pattern. I have gotten a "decent pattern"...,now mind you that I am patterning at 60 yards....thus thinning out the use of ALL the chokes..only the best of the best...., with a .715 Modified choke. Different manufacturers use different diameters and label them Modified, Full, Improved, etc. For instance, Mossberg's Modified choke measures .715, whereas Winchester's Modified choke tube measure .710. They are each intercahngeable with the Browning Invector, and pre '93 Ruger's chokes,..also Stoeger. So, I have selected a .710 Modified Carlson's to try in the gun today, perhaps. The .715 was borderline, BUT the best of the 4 I tried..Improved, Modified, Full and Extra Full Mossberg Choke Tubes. I am trying to slighting tighten the constriction to see if that shoudn't hit the "nail on the head"....to say. I'll report what I find if anyone is interested. Thanks for your input .....I truly appreciate it and any other advice I can get!

The 835 I got has the 24 inch over bored Turkey barrel do yall think it would be best if I got the 28 inch barrel or just try the different chakes on this barrel first.

i'd try the chokes you have and see what she's holding!or how she likes to throw them,so to speak.

I think if you'll research enough online, you'll find that the barrel length between 24 inches and 28 inches won't make that much of a difference...it's the amount of constriction....at least that's how George Trulock Of Trulock Chokes explained it to me a couple of years ago. If you call them, they, other than the receptionist, will be very generous with their time and do what they can to accomodate your needs. Last week they told me that I can buy a choke from them and if it doesn't pattern sufficiently, I can send it back and they'll send me another...HOW'S that for service. In a rifle, an inch of barrel generally adds @ 100 ft/sec in velocity. I am not sure and doubt that it works the same with a shotgun...but I imagine it does have some effect on it. Do soem research.. I have the 835 in the 24 inch barrel...have owned 4 of them..different camo patterns, until now..it is matte black and the barrel is ported. It DOES NOT pattern as well as the othr 3 I had, with the same chokes.....but as I was told here and otherwise, that each gun is different. Decide what you intend to use it for, be it Turkey hunting, deer hunting, etc. and give those people a call.
