My father was given this knife in the mid 70's by a friend in the military and he said that it came from Germany and was made from Blue Steel. Only identifying marks on the knife or the sheath are the number 5000 on the knife.http://i50.tinypic.com/21jd9ae.jpg

SOG(Solingen) Special Forces Super Bowie probably made from Hitachi Blue Steel in Japan in the 1960's. Nice Knife and the blade should be stainless. Can't tell from the picture.

It is military, made for the Studies and Observation Group (SOG), designed by the counterinsurgency office, during Vietnam, circa 1966. It was made in Japan, the metal on the handle is cast and the blade is SKS-3 chrome moly steel, parkerized to keep from making a glare. It is the second lot manufactured due to the 5000 on the blade. The first lot was completely unmarked to make them untraceable to the country of origin. There were about 3500 of these made in the second lot.

So what is the answer DKA? Are any of our even close? I believe if the knife was made in Japan, it will be more valuable as a collector item. The issue of the Hitachi steel will be whether it was made before or after 1967.
