Authorities have identified an Onslow County man who died in an accidental shooting Sunday at a home on Richlands Highway.
Jackie G. Riley, 53, died after a friend accidentally shot him while reassembling a pistol in the backyard of 3421 Richlands Highway, authorities said.
Riley’s death has been ruled accidental by the county medical examiner.
Sheriff Ed Brown said the two men, Riley and his friend, were shooting targets Sunday afternoon when the friend’s weapon malfunctioned.
The friend removed the magazine from a .22-caliber automatic Browning pistol, disassembled and reassembled the pistol unaware a bullet remained inside. When the man replaced the weapon’s spring it caused the firing pin to hit the round inside the barrel and the handgun discharged. The bullet hit Riley in the right upper temple, authorities said.
Prosecutors have not said whether charges are pending in the case.
