Hey I was wondering if anyone here has ever had any experience using a hog feeder for deer. I have a huge one that I acquired a few years ago and was thinking of trying it but I don't know if the deer will open the flaps to get to the feed.

It would be interesting to see Dixie. I know a guy who hangs a pvc pipe full of corn with a piece of panty hose at the bottom. The deer bump the hose to allow corn to fall out on the ground. My guess is that our deer would be afraid of the falling lid noise. I'm sure it would work in texas!

I hadn't ever heard of the PVC/panty hose idea....something to think about. I have just cut the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket off @3 inches or so and plumber strapped it to the bottom of the 4" DWV pipe and capped the top. Drilled holes in the "bucket" bottom for water drainage. They eat outa' those willingly, along with the squirrels...lol. Dixiegun, you might be able to configure a roof or water preventer from getting to the corn after yo take those lids off.....I imagine they would eat outa' them readily then. But I agree about the noise and the effort with the deer.

The PVC feeder I have works great. It is made out a 5 ft section on 4 inch PVC. At the bottom there is a elbow I think about 45 degrees and about another 6 inches of pipe that is capped off. There is about 1.5 inch hole in the middle of the 45 elbow. You tie it up against a tree and fill it from the top. As you fill it a pile develops under the hole and the corn stops flowing when the pile reaches it. Works pretty good considering that it doesn't take much time to build and is cheap. I also paint mine sort of camo with some flat brown and black paint just so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

At one time in th epast, I used the 4 inch pvc pipe and would just tie it to a tree and have the bottom just off the ground to allow for the corn to run out as it was eaten.....I was bowhunting back then, and WITNESSED a couple of squirrels digging away at the corn...just like dogs...and emptied my pipes and had a huge pile of corn all around the base of the tree.....LOLOLOL It was funny to watch, but I changed that design after that. It was almost as if they were digging to find the bottom of the barrel or something....

You must not have any Bears where you hunt.......feeders in Pamlico county have to be hung HIGH with steel cable and the winches locked in place. No need to even think of a feeder on the ground unless you want it destroyed !!!!

Only the occasional mention of a siting...VERY rare.... That would be an ADDITIONAL problem.

seen one made with an old plow blade and a pickle barrel.you cut the bottom of the barrel off and cut grooves in it so when you stand it up in the old plow blade the corndribbled out the sides.the thought of it was good and it was simple to make but i didn't like it sitting in the field an huntin over it.it was big an bulky i just didn't like it for huntin over,if it was in the backyard or something else it would be perfect.

I have 4 automatic timer feeders (Cabela's brand)mounted on 55 gallon barrels that I need to sell....reasonable...VERY reasonable....if they even still work. I haven't used them in a couple of years and they may or may not...I coould check them if any interests.......This may not have been the appropriate location, ..I am not really soliciting but rather the 55 gallon drum brought it out of me....

Is that timer set to run for 30 seconds or 1 minute to gt that kinda' dispersion????? How did that deer's right antler base get damaged...shot the year before, hit by car..you have no clue???? I am sure you have noticed that...but he REALLY has potential!!! What county are you in..that may be a monster where he's located? Heck.. the smaller buck has right side damage too.....or is just real young.

Just typical 18 month and 2 and 1/2 year old deer. No damage to either! Most folks would kill the smaller deer and call him a scrub. The 7 point will be a fine 8- 10 point next year and the younger one likely an 8. This pic was taken in Duplin County

My eyes must just be gettin' old...I thought HIS right base looked different than HIS left base....might be the camera angle.....

we scatter shelled corn and i have watched the bears lay down and rake it to them
the boys that put feeders out have to winch them up in the trees after the bears tore up the ground feeders
i left half bag of corn in my box stand(12'off the ground) once and the bear climbed up and preceded to drag it through the woods
we had them climb up the ladder stands and tear the seats off and play with them
