Well, always check the regs but, I don't think you can go wrong with a Ruger Super Blackhawk with a 7.5 inch barrel and chambered in .44 Mag. How ever a .357 Mag will do nicely. Plus both cal. will take medium size game well, as long as the ranges are within their capabilities.

to be honest with you i am not to experienced with handguns i have shot .22 and.40cal you mentioned the 357 and 44 how many yrds. are they good for or does it very depending on the ammo? i am going to start a handgun collection and i also really want an extra sidearm for yote hunting>

Oh I would shoot a deer with a .44 Mag out to probably 150 yards if the conditions were right and I had the confidence to do it. I would only do it with a scope on there though. I would only shoot a deer out to 100 yards with a .357 Mag. Much less energy but with a good bullet and shot placement would be fine. I have shot my cousins .44 out to 100 with open sights and it was fun. I had a 5 inch group for 5 shots using a rest. No, that's not super accurate but it wll def. kill a deer. A scope would no doubt tighten that group up, just as any scope would on any firearm. Yeah I love the Ruger Super Black Hawk.
This is the model Super Black Hawk I would buy. It comes with Ruger scope rings as do all Rugers that accept scope. The rings are very durable. It is single action only which means you have to manually cock the hammer back before each shot. Pain in the butt sometimes however, the trigger pull is much smoother and shorter, and lighter!

It actually doesn't recoil bad. It is heavy though at 52 oz. But the Single action design and the Bisley grip makes it much more comfortable to shoot. I've wanted to get one for a while. Maybe here shortly. I'd put a nice Leupold or Burris Handgun scope on it. NASTY little combo.

i usually carry my s&w .357 mag model 65 as a side ,let's remember bears are predators too. or my single action .22 mag.
as far as range, inside 50 - 60 yards at best for a .357 unless you practice alot. with ammo prices that could be pricey. my .22 mag maybe 60 if i'm steady.
but with the .357 thought ,if you hit any body part the dog ain't goin far.
by the way, mustang, thanks for the web site invite.

Ruger Blackhawk in 6.5 inch barrel. Or the Ruger GP100 6 inch. The Blackwawk is like the Super Blackhawk I showed you earlier but it is a little bit different and not made for .44 Mag. rounds.

I tried my 6" Ruger GP100 on deer down in Texas. Hornady's newer lever gun ammo worked great. Doe dropped after 10 feet @ 55-60 yards with their .357 loads. My Dad uses a 6" Ruger Blackhawk back home in Illinois. I think that I was to get a dedicated hunting pistol, I would probably go with a .44 Mag Ruger Super Blackhawk. I like their sights and they fit great in your hand. Plus, I beleive the .44 Mag is a little more universal as far as different species you can hunt with it. I don't think I would trust my ability with the .357 on anything much bigger than a whitetail.

Oh come on.....NO takers on the .500.........?????? LOL It IS a TRUE HAND CANNON, though I have shot worse recoiling pistols. I had a Thompson Center once, with a .44 Magnum Bull Barrel that a gunsmith in Benson had rechambered to .444 Marlin. That w/o a doubt WAS the MOST violent handgun I have ever shot. It recoiled FAR worse than the Smith & Wesson 500, with the 8 3/8 inch ported barrel. I haven't loaded the 700 grain bullets in in yet though........to be continued....lol.

Curious to see that no one as yet mentioned the Thompson contender.....is it that y'all are opposed to single shots? I shoot one in a stainless 14" ported barrel chambered for the 7-30 Waters cartridge. ( 7mm bullet in a necked down 30-30. ) Even with factory loads, with a good rest it is a legimitate 200 yd pistol. There are a number of cartridges available for this adaptable gun that many know can be converted to rifle/shotgun etc. by switching barrels/stocks etc.
I have NEVER hunted dogs but would welcome the opportunity to go with someone who has/does so I could get " edumicated" on them.......LOL ( hint hint )
